Bobby Jindal's term as Repug governor of Louisiana ends next Jan, and he has quit the Repug Pres race after getting 1% or less in the polls.

David Vitter, the Repug who sees prostitutes, was expected to win today's LA Gov election easily, but instead he has been crushed 56-44 by Democrat John Bel Edwards. He has since announced that he will retire from the Senate when his term ends in Jan 2017.

So some good news for Dems in winning a southern state.

Americans feel competent to critique the political situations of other countries. The bad economic situation in Greece is frequently blamed on socialism by those who ignore how well the Scandinavian and German economies are doing.

I am interested in learning how people in other countries think about the United States. My guess is that civilized people in Europe and the British Commonwealth often see the United States as a violent, uncouth country run for the rich with the support of a white proletariat unable to see that by opposing policies like the ACA because they help blacks white blue collar workers also oppose policies that help them.

Settled issues in Europe are still debated in the United States. Universal health care is an obvious example of this.

I see nothing exceptionally good in American exceptionalism. I want the United States to become more like Europe.

That's why they had to go all the way to Kennebunkport, Maine to find someone they could blame for their mismanagement of hurricane damage.

 

Bobby Jindal spent his second term in office pursuing the Republican nomination for President. This required him to take Grover Norquist's no tax pledge. In order to keep this pledge, he had to pull financial tricks such as assessing a fee of $1500 on every college student, then granting every student a $1500 tax credit. The tuition tax was never considered in the tax bill, but the credit was. The $350 million tax credit was used to satisfy Norquist's revenue neutral requirement for all tax laws.

Poor Bobby drank the koolade. He really believed trickle down economics would work. His plan was to present Louisiana to the nation as an example of what could be accomplished by a "true" conservative. Of course, he was reluctant to mention that the driving force in the Louisiana economy in his first administration was Federal money for Hurricane Katrina relief, followed quickly by corporate money to compensate for the BP oil spill. Jindal spent a lot of energy fighting with the EPA over how to deal with the oil slick. He demanded the EPA grant permits to build levees to keep oil out of oyster beds. The EPA experts said it was not that simple and the levees were likely to do no good, or create more harm. In the end, Jindal got his way and the levees were built. The oyster beds were flooded with fresh water and all the oysters died.

When the oyster fishermen applied for compensation for their losses from the BP fund, they were turned down, because the oysters were not harmed by oil.
