Poor people not allowed in AOC's luxury apartment complex

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., recently moved into a luxury apartment complex in Washington, D.C. that does not offer the affordable housing units that were a key plank in the New York congresswoman’s campaign platform.

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, who said in November that she was concerned about being able to afford rent in D.C., now earns a $174,000 annual salary and is living in a newly built high-rise in the city’s Navy Yard area, the Washington Free Beacon reported last week.

The freshman congresswoman, a self-described socialist, campaigned on a platform to expand affordable housing, and her controversial Green New Deal proposal promises “Safe, affordable, adequate housing” for all.

But Ocasio-Cortez’s new building — built by leading D.C. developer WC Smith — is part of a luxury complex whose owners specifically do not offer affordable units under Washington, D.C.’s Affordable Dwelling Units program. The Washington Examiner is not naming the building or complex.

In 2018, a civil rights attorney sued the Washington, D.C. government for allegedly discriminatory gentrification policies, claiming that development in Navy Yard area and other parts of southeast D.C. encouraged an influx of affluent “millennial creatives” who displaced minority residents.

Ocasio-Cortez, commonly referred to as "AOC," repeatedly criticized luxury real estate developers during her campaign, claiming that their buildings hiked up rent prices and pushed low-income residents out of their neighborhoods.

“We need to kick luxury real estate lobbyists to the curb and defend working people’s way of life,” Ocasio-Cortez said last March. “Skyrocketing cost of living is a national crisis that CAN be addressed. It’s not just an NYC issue - it’s happening in every US metro area.”

Ocasio-Cortez also promised not to take campaign contributions from luxury developers during her campaign. “It’s time we stand up to the luxury developer lobby,” she said in a speech last April. “Every official is too scared to do it - except me.”

Her new apartment complex — which boasts on its website that it vows to take "luxury apartment living" to a higher level — offers over 100,000 square feet of amenities for its residents.

These include: two private massage rooms with state-of-the-art hydrotherapy beds; men’s and women’s saunas; a full-scale demonstration kitchen with wood-fired pizza oven; a 25-meter indoor lap pool; a rooftop infinity pool with panoramic views of the Capitol; a Peloton cycling studio with over a dozen bikes; and a fireside lounge featuring a Steinway & Sons player piano.

Also included is a PGA-grade golf simulation lounge with a wrap-around screen and viewing bar that allows residents to play virtually at dozens of the world’s most exclusive golf courses with the touch of a button. Last week, Democrats mocked President Trump for installing a new golf simulator at the White House — updating with his own money one originally installed by former President Barack Obama.

Apartments in the building currently start at $1,840 per month for a 440 square foot studio, and range up to $5,200 for a three-bedroom. The average rent in Washington D.C. is $1,340 for a one-bedroom apartment and $1,550 for a two-bedroom, according to the most recent data from Apartment List.

W. Christopher Smith, 66, the Annapolis-based CEO of WC Smith, is a Democratic donor who contributed to Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign and the Senate campaigns of Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-M.D., Sen. Mark Warner, D-VA., and Jane Raybould, who lost a 2018 Senate race in Nebraska.

Smith donated to Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., in 2017, and 11 employees of WC Smith gave $6,900 to the campaign of Muriel Bower, the Democratic mayor of D.C. In 2018, WC Smith's vice-president of communications Ann-Marie Bairstow gave over $1300 to Act Blue earmarked in small amounts — $100 or less — for various candidates, including $50 to Ocasio-Cortez.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed over anti-Amazon push in New York City billboard: 'Thanks for nothing'


Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is getting some negative reviews in her home city.



Fresh off helping drive Amazon’s planned headquarters out of New York City, the rising Democratic star has inspired a billboard in Times Square.

“Amazon Pullout, Thanks for Nothing, AOC,” the billboard, located on 42nd street near 8th Avenue, reads.


The high-visibility blast is funded by the Job Creators Network and will be up for all to see until next Wednesday.


“The Amazon pullout is a perfect example of what we’ve been saying: socialism takes and capitalism creates,” Alfredo Ortiz, JCN president and CEO said in a release on Wednesday.

“The economic consequences of the HQ2 termination gives America a small taste of the harm that is to come if Ocasio-Cortez’s anti-business canon comes to fruition and is made federal policy.”

It comes after Ocasio-Cortez vigorously defended her role in sinking Amazon’s move to New York City on Tuesday in the face of bipartisan criticism, claiming the deal would have been “one of the biggest giveaways in state history” and would have priced people out of the local community.

“Frankly, the knee-jerk reaction assuming that I ‘don’t understand’ how tax giveaways to corps work is disappointing,” she tweeted.

“No, it’s not possible that I could come to a different conclusion. The debate *must* be over my intelligence & understanding, instead of the merits of the deal.”

The freshman Democratic New York congresswoman has faced days of criticism from normally friendly media voices and fellow Democrats over her role in Amazon's decision to pull back from building a $2.5 billion campus in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens.

Amazon had cited the opposition of “a number of state and local politicians” in its decision to abandon the plans. Ocasio-Cortez and others at the local level had pointed to incentives such as a $2.5 billion in tax breaks as a reason for their opposition.

“If we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district ourselves, if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that money, if we wanted to,” Ocasio-Cortez said last week.

Mayor Bill de Blasio pushed back on that claim on Sunday. Even as he slammed Amazon for its decision, the mayor said critics wrongly suggested that tax breaks represented money that could be spent on other things. He said it wasn’t “money you had over here. And it was going over there.”



The Democratic mayor said: “That $3 billion that would go back in tax incentives was only after we were getting the jobs and getting the revenue.”

Fellow Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., accused those who are against the deal, including Ocasio-Cortez, of being opposed to jobs.

"It used to be that we would protest wars. Now we are protesting jobs?” she said on CNN Friday, before criticizing the economic arguments of those opposed to the Amazon move.

"I'm a progressive too, but I'm pragmatic,” she said. “We are $4 billion less than we usually get and yet we are kicking out a company that would have been projected [to pay] over 10 years roughly $27 billion in taxes.”

Amazon announced in November that it had chosen the Long Island City section of Queens for one of two new headquarters, with the other in Arlington, Va. Both would get 25,000 jobs. A third site in Nashville, Tenn., would get 5,000.

The company planned to spend $2.5 billion building the New York office, choosing the area in part because of its large pool of tech talent. The governor and the mayor had argued that the project would spur economic growth that would pay for the $2.8 billion in state and city incentives many times over.

Republicans and even some Democrats swooned when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pitched a 70 percent tax rate on the rich — but a new poll out Tuesday showed that most Americans like the idea.

The Hill-HarrisX survey found that 59 percent of US voters support raising the top rate to 70 percent, which she said would be applied to income above the first $10 million taxpayers earn.

According to the poll, 45 percent of Republican voters said they favored it while 55 percent were opposed.

Independent voters backed the plan by a 60 to 40 percent margin while Democrats supported it, 71 percent to 29 percent.

The Reuters–Ipsos survey found 85 percent of Democrats said they support the policy along with 52 percent of Republicans...

Well, of course people support higher taxes for the rich and free medical care for all because they don't expect to ever pay for any of it.

"Are you willing to pay an additional $5,000 a year in taxes to support a government run medical system?"
OR
"If, in order to pay off the national debt of $22 TRILLION in 10 years, would you be willing to pay an additional $10,000 a year in taxes?"
OR
"Would you be willing to pay an additional $2,000 in taxes to guarantee a free college education for all?"

 

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez does not want ordinary Americans to pay for this stuff. She wants the rich and corporations to pay for it. So do most Americans.

The Democrats let the tax issue get away from during them in the late 1970's with the passing Proposition in 13. The Democrat Party came to be seen as the party that taxed hard working white folks to pay welfare checks for blacks.

The Democrats need to be seen as the party that provides good things, paid for by high taxes on the rich, and which Republicans want to take away.

When race is the issue the Democrats lose.

When class is the issue the Democrats win.

If Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez controls her instinct for identity politics and emphasizes how the politics of Robbin Hood can benefit white blue collar workers she has a good future in politics.

Ivanka Trump claimed most Americans don’t support the progressive agenda set forth by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), which includes increasing the federal minimum wage and guaranteeing jobs to everyone in the U.S.

The senior White House adviser and eldest daughter to President Donald Trump rejected the ideology behind the Green New Deal during an interview with Fox News released Monday.

“I don’t think most Americans, in their heart, want to be given something,” Ivanka Trump said of the Green New Deal’s job guarantees initiative.

“I’ve spent a lot of time traveling around this country over the last four years,” she added. “People want to work for what they get.”

The Green New Deal, spearheaded by Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), is a set of policy proposals focused on job creation through the development of the U.S. renewable energy sector.

If enacted, the deal would ensure all Americans have “a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security,” according to the proposed legislation.

Over 80 percent of registered voters support the Green New Deal, according to a poll released in December conducted by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication.

Some 55 percent of registered voters said they would support raising the federal minimum wage to $15, according to a Hill-HarrisX poll released in January. Another 27 percent said it should be raised but to a lesser amount.

But Ivanka Trump told Fox News that a “guaranteed minimum” isn’t popular with most Americans.

“I think that this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want,” she said. “They want the ability to be able to secure a job. They want the ability to live in a country where there’s the potential for upward mobility.”

Twitter users hammered Ivanka Trump, who was born into wealth and has been accused of benefiting from nepotism her entire life, over her comments dismissing the Green New Deal’s job guarantee proposal.

Because I make too much to be taxed like i'm at the poverty level and I'm making waaaaay to less to have enough assets, diversification of investments, and high priced lawyers to find 50 loopholes around paying any taxes at all. The middle class is getting hammered in this country and Trump made it a whole lot worse.

I too believe that if someone is willing to work solid 40 hours a week they should be able to maintain a decent standard of living which is impossible at the current minimum wage and with the income inequality between the rich and middle class that has grown out of control its time regular workers were able to take care of their families if they were willing to work a regular job for a regular wage.

The woman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, tweeted "We're in charge" in the context of a proposed sweeping government takeover of the economy, saying her critics who haven't proposed an alternative were "shouting from the cheap seats." She also declared "I'm the boss, how about that?" in a recent video interview. The statements shocked certain groups of people across the country, namely, those who haven't been in the same room as a history book anytime in the past few decades.

"Wow, a socialist who was elected on her promises to work 'for the people' is suddenly telling everyone she's in charge and they have to listen to her? That's really weird," said one man in Portland who dropped his world history class in high school. "I would have thought socialists never suddenly transform into power-hungry maniacs as soon as they get their first high from telling people what to do."

"It's just, I've never heard of that happening in the past, say, 100 years or so," he added before he had to return to his Starbucks shift, wrapping his work apron around his hammer and sickle T-shirt.

Another thing shared in common by those who were surprised by this development is never having read Animal Farm by George Orwell, sources confirmed at publishing time.
